complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning and welcome to mornings on 2. welcome to december. it is sunday december 1st. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach let's get into it and good morning to you rosemary orozco. >> we have another mild day. today is going to be the warmest of the next several days. subtle changes taking place this morning. i see patchy fog but it is not as dense and thick out there. we'll take a look around coming up in just a moment, it's a chilly one, some areas cooler than yesterday by a few degrees. i'll have your numbers slightly warmer for the second half of our afternoon. i'll have your afternoon highs and wintery weather headed our way. i'll show you when we may see that slight chance for a few scattered showers and just how cold our temperatures will be come midweek coming up. happening now, now that this thanksgiving holiday weekend is coming to an end, the airports across the bay area are preparing for another busy travel day. thousands of passengers are

expected to pass through sfo, oakland international and san san jose monett that today. at san fransisco international 1.2 million travelers are expected to pass through the airport this weekend. if you have a flight scheduled today you are encouraged to arrive 90 minutes early. and make sure you check flight status before you head to the airport. oakland international is seeing fewer passengers flying out of its airport despite spending nearly a half billion million dollars to upgrade its terminal. it's seen a decrease of about 5 million passengers since 2007. sfo has seen a 9 million passenger jump. the decrease is now raising questions about whether ridership on the 3.2-mile b.a.r.t. connector to oakland's airport will justify that $484 million price tag. right now about 3,000 people use the b.a.r.t. airport shuttle bus each day. and we are following

developing news in new york city where four people died after a metro north passenger train derailed in the bronx. it happened shortly after 7:00 this morning eastern time. according to reports, so far eight cars have gone off the tracks, and we can see from video that at least two cars are on their sides. there's no word about how many people were on the train at the time. fast and furious fans are mourning the loss of actor paul walker this morning. walker died yesterday in a car accident in southern california. the 40-year-old was the passenger in his friend's 2005 porsche carrera gt when it crashed and burst into flames. his friends say they tried to save his life. >> there was nothing. we tried. we went through fire extinguishers. >> the los angeles county sheriff's office says speed may have been a factor in the crash. the driver of the car also died. prior to the accident, walker and his friend were attending a charity event to benefit victims of typhoon haiyan in the philippines. paul walker started out his

career by appearing in a pampers commercial when he was just 2 years old. his film career took off when he was cast in the fast and furious movies. >> i need to know for sure. >> then i'm going with you. >> walker was currently working on the 7th film of the franchise which was due out next year. walker was not just a car enthusiast on the silver screen. off screen he competed in the red line races series. he described himself as "out doorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline juneky, and i do some acting on the side. he's survived by his 15-year- old daughter meadow. fans and stars are reacting to his death on social media this morning. walker's costar vin diesel tweeted brothers i will miss you very much. rest in peace, xxx. his other costar tweeted friends never say good-bye. rip paul walker a truly

wonderful person and marie osmond tweeted, my heart is broken for the loss of family friend paul walker. such an amazing actor and person. sending thoughts and prayers to his family. we have new information now on the toddler who fell into a vallejo pond. he does remain in critical condition this morning. police now tell us the 2-year- old poi was fish -- boy was fishing with a guardian around 4 p.m. she was attempting to tie a rope around that child to prevent him from falling into the water. when she briefly turned her back he fell into that pond. she didn't know how to swim and couldn't rescue him. a good samaritan jumped in and started searching. once on scene diane stomeyer jumped into the murky water and after three attempts found him. >> they arrived on scene, within 45 seconds to a minute they were able to identify the location of the child and pull him from the water. he does have life-threatening injuries or is in a life-

threatening condition. >> the area this happened is a popular fishing spot near the fairgrounds and 6 flags discovery kingdom. the boy was first taken to kaiser medical center in vallejo and transferred to oakland where he remains in critical condition this morning. the guardian went to the hospital because she was having breathing problems. there's new information that might explain why north korea is detaining an 85-year- old man from palo alto. friday night north korea released a video in which merrill newman apologized for his role in the korean war six decades ago. reuters news agency and mercury news report he once served in a top secret army unit in which he trained anticommunist gorillas. because no peace treaty was signed north korea considers the conflict against south korea and the u.s. on going and that newman is basically a prisoner of war. a stanford professor who is an expert on asia calls the video propaganda that it may be a sign of something positive to come. >> it's clearly something that he did under some duress and

hopefully to lead to his release. >> officials with the swedish embassy were allowed to visit newman yesterday. the white house security council says it's deeply concerned to newman's well being due to his age and health which includes a heart condition. happening today, people around the world are uniting for the 25th annual world aids day. it's an opportunity to show support for people who live with the disease and to honor those who have died. an estimated 34 million people worldwide test positive for hiv. nearly 1 million of those people live in the united states. while there have been many scientific advances in hiv treatment, research for a cure continues. about 400 people came together last night at the national aids memorial grove to remember loved ones lost. event organizers transformed that grove into a magical forest with dancing fairies and lights. many of the people who pinned notes on a symbolic tree did so in honor of people who died. it was a place for prayer,

36 in novato. 36 in santa rosa. some of us are waking up a few degrees above freezing mark. walnut creek, 40 degrees in livermore. 40s around the bay. 43 at the airport in oakland, 48 san fransisco, 49sfo and half-moon bay with fair skies this morning. 41 outside your door at low 40s in mountain view. if we shift to the east, 49 degrees in orinda, 42 lafayette, another reporting station near walnut creek reporting 40 degrees. we have two reporting stations in walnut creek. low 40s in areas around pittsburgh. mid-to upper 40s around antioch and brentwood. a ridge of high pressure still in place although it's beginning to -- well, you can see, we pushed out just a little bit. that ridge is weakening just a bit. it has to do with this system right here. this is going to be making tracks towards areas right around washington. by tomorrow and then by

tomorrow night we will begin to feel those changes, although we won't see so much in the way of rain, we could see a few sprinkles. it's the cold weather that will be coming our way. for today temperatures well above average, once again even nearing record temperatures in some cases. normally we're in the upper 50s to about 60 degrees this time of year. take a look at these numbers. 70 degrees for santa rosa, 69 for fairfield. 68 in vallejo, 69 for oakland and 66 expected in san fransisco. low to mid-60s along the coastline with partly cloudy skies. 69 in mountain view, 70 degrees san jose and 71 degrees this afternoon. in santa cruz, low 70s morgan hill as well as gilroy. in the extended forecast with the second half of your weekend in view. as you notice, temperatures warmest today, cooling trend begins tomorrow. by the second half of the afternoon, including clouds, especially over parts of the north bay, and then monday night into tuesday morning a slight chance at a few scattered showers. that will go away but the cold

weather settles in. we are looking at mid to upper 50s in the forecast for tuesday afternoon. low 50s on wednesday. low 50s on thursday. those are the afternoon highs. take a look at the overnight lows. upper 20s to upper 30s expected by thursday morning for inland communities as well as the bay. i will show you that futurecast model on the possibility of rain coming our way in a bit. plans are moving forward to build a new park along the bay bridge. the artist rendering shows the park near the eastern span. it would be a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. it includes a fishing pier, a zip line and rock climbing wall. the area would also include 300 spaces for people to park their cars and then walk or ride their bicycle on the popular new path of the eastern span. other proposals include a small cafe, large sculptures as well as some trees. time now 7:11. the 49ers preparing for a critical game today. the key player who's getting ready to get back on the field. plus the deadline has come

good morning a live look there at the sun shining over the oakland estuary, thinking about heading to the farmer's market at jacqueline don square right now. 46 degrees in oakland. there is new information ability a police helicopter crash at a pub in glasgow scotland. a crane did remove pieces of

that chopper today. the accident killed three people on board the helicopter and another five people in the pub. 32 people were admitted to local hospitals with injuries. as of this morning, more than half were getting discharged. investigators say the pub was packed friday night as people celebrated the eve of a major scottish holiday when that helicopter came down. >> as you see it was very emotional to see these people that would choke and even young guys crying just through the sheer shock of it. >> one man outside the pub with a cell phone picture of his father is holding it up. his father is still missing. a prayer service for the victims is being held today at the city's main cathedral. a passenger is being hailed as a hero for sacrificing her own needs to help survivors of a plane crash in alaska. the cessna prop plane went down in a remote part of southwest alaska on friday night. four people were killed, but there were survivors, and a

woman phoned for help while trying but failing to resuscitate her 5-month-old boy. she then had to overcome that loss and walk nearly a mile in the cold and fog to reach first responders and guide them to that crash site. new this morning, a strong earthquake has rocked parts of eastern indonesia. the 6.3 magnitude quake hit early this morning. according to the u.s. geological survey, there have been no reports of any injuries or damages from that quake. according to a local meteorology, that quake is unlikely to trigger a tsunami. the obama administration announced the health care web site met the deadline for upgrades proposed by the president. improvements allow more than 50,000 people to log on at once and 800,000 people each day. the site was taken down late friday night into saturday morning for additional upgrades that includes speeding up

response times and reducing errors. critics say they're still underhemmed. >> there have been delays out of the what zoo. the president delayed the individual mandate. now we find out small businesses won't be able to go online and enroll until what, another delay, a year. >> the first big test of the repaired web site will come in a few weeks when consumers are expected to meet a deadline. hewlett packard is replacing verizon communications as the provider of data center services for that site. here in the bay area, volunteers are helping people sign up for covered california this weekend. a few dozen folks attended an event at the concord library to learn more about the status health insurance exchange. the cover ca.com web site has received more than 385,000 applications so far. >> cover california's web site has been pretty good. we've had some slowdowns but by

and large it's worked very well and the calculator is excellent. >> more events will be held the next two saturdays at the concord and lafayette libraries. 60% of young california kids eat fast food at least once a week. now the number is even higher among latino children at 70%. researchers say among all 2 to 5-year-old children, 1 in 10 eats fast food at least three times a week. researchers say the consumption of sugary drinks has gone down. the study was based on health surveys conducted by ucla between 2003 and 2009. although the commercial dungeon this crab season begins on the north coast of california, there's a hitch. crab fishing was supposed to start north of the mendocino county line to the oregon border. however there's a dispute over the price. north coast crabbers want $3 a pound, the same price as san fransisco fishermen but northern buyers are offering 2.50. negotiations are scheduled to

resume this week. the commercial crab season started last month for the coastlines south of point arena. jonathan martin will not play for the miami dolphins. the team replaced the player on the nonfootball illness list which freed up a roster spot. martin left the team at the end of october accusing richie incognito of hazing. the team reached a deal with incognito in which it will pay him while extending his suspension. it is an important divisional game for san fransisco against st. louis as the 49ers trying to make the playoffs. san fransisco is getting reinforcements at the right time of the season. michael crabtree expected to see his first action this season after being activated this week. he injured his achilles in a spring drill and has been rehabbing ever since. kickoff set for 1:05. the raiders are off this weekend after playing the cowboys on thanksgiving. matt mcloin has opened up the

the bay area is sending more help to the philippines. we caught up with jane sandoval a nurse in san fransisco as she

was packing up to leave for the philippines last night. she said she is honored and humbled to assist in the relief effort organized by a network of nurses. >> my parents came from the area that was affected, so in a way i'm paying homage to my parents and i think they would really be proud of that effort. >> sandoval is joining three other nurses in the philippines. the nurses network has set up mobile medical clinics to serve victims. the death toll stands at more than 5600 with close to 1800 others missing. reality tv star kim kardashian is getting blasted for keeping much of the proceeds from an auction to help typhoon victims she auctioned off high end clothes and accessories on ebay with a portion of the money going to disaster relief. kardashian is keeping 90% of the profits. many of her fans are criticizing her on her blog. one person asking on that blog "how can you even sleep at

night." well, we've posted a link on ktvu.com. if you would like to donate to the typhoon relief efforts in the philippines and we at ktvu and kicu have teamed up with san fransisco 4 to match your donations to the red cross dollar for dollar. you can find the information right below the video player. some dogs are headed to san fransisco international this holiday season to help ease passengers' fears of flying. the airport is teaming up with the san fransisco spca for the new wag brigade program. it features certified therapy animals that will help calm down passengers who face long delays and are just afraid to fly. they will wear personalized vests that read pet me. more information about the program is expected to be announced on tuesday. a new report ranks san fransisco international as one of the worst airports when it comes to weather delays according to weather.com. sfo willinged more than 30,000 delays last year due to fog and rain. the web site advices flying later in the day. rounding out the worst airports for weather delays, newark,

dropping off passengers at some of these thanksgiving travelers prepare to head home. it's busy right now but what you're seeing here is the usual morning rush, nothing out of the ordinary here. there are no cancellations to tell you about. the friday before thanksgiving was actually sfo's busiest day. this airport is expecting heavier than usual traffic today, about 130,000 travelers expected to pass through. airport duty manager joe walsh says years ago it seems like they would get a flood of travelers on wednesday, the day before thanksgiving, and that all those travelers would come back on sunday. now he says passengers flow has changed a little bit where people are starting their thanksgiving travels earlier in the week. and coming bag on -- back on sundays or monday the extended travel period has made for a less stressful week. >> i would say less crowded than i've experienced in the past. sometimes i've been in lines that wind through the entire

airport. we had relatively breezy security so we got lucky. >> the chp says you can expect highways to be more congested than usual for a sunday. 4.4 million californians drove more than 50 miles to celebrate thanksgiving. many of those people will be on the roads to head back home by car and chp plans to have a heavy presence on bay area roadways to make sure everyone gets home safely. live at san fransisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. and let's take a look at some of the other top stories we are following this morning. four people have died and 40 others have been injured after a metro north passenger train derailed in the bronx. eight cars came off the tracks and at least two of them are on their side. a 2-year-old boy who fell into a vallejo pond on a fishing trip is in critical condition at kaiser hospital in oakland. a guardian was trying to tie a rope around the child to keep him from falling into the water yesterday afternoon but he fell in when she turned away for just a few seconds. there's no word on when or

if north korea will release an 85-year-old american from palo alto. north korea released a video of merrill newman apologizing for his actions during the korean war. he reportedly served in a secret army unit that trained anti-communist gorillas during the war. >> fast and furious fans are mourning the loss of actor paul walker this morning. walker died yesterday in a car crash in southern california. the 40-year-old was the passenger in his friend's 2005 porsche carrera gt when it hit something and burst into flames. officers say speed did play a role in that crash. authorities say they believe they're zeroing in on a man suspected in a case of animal abuse in san fransisco. animal control officers say this man right here threw two cats belonging to a homeless woman into the bay last monday. officers spent around eight hours looking at surveillance video from cameras around the embarcadero when they caught a break. the hyatt hotel reported a run in with the man matching the suspect's description. the woman who witnessed the abuse was shown a picture of

the individual. >> she knew without a doubt she could identify this man if we showed her a picture, and sure enough when we did show her the picture that we thought was the suspect from what she had said and from what others said she absolutely 100% identified him. >> the suspect could face felony animal cruelty charges. authorities say the cat's owner was traumatized by the attack at pier 14. the search continues for a couple who disappeared during a fishing trip in sacramento county. 64-year-old van channpnexi and his wife took their boat out on thursday. no one was inside the boat when it was discovered. he's described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, bald, clean shaven and wearing glasses. his wife is 5 feet 3 inches with brown hair and brown eyes. anyone with information is asked to call the sacramento county sheriff's department. more than 100 people around the bay area have been arrested for driving under the influence over the holiday weekend.

officers have arrested 111 people since thursday. the highway patrol hasn't released statewide numbers yet. last year there were about 800 arrests across california and 17 people were killed in dui related collisions. sonoma county may erect a permanent memorial for a teenage boy shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. right now there's a makeshift memorial for 13-year-old andy lopez. he was killed when the deputy mistakenly thought the toy gun lopez was carrying was real. county supervisors are set to consider several items related to that case on tuesday. supervisors could order a plan to create a park in the moreland avenue neighborhood where he grew up and died. other legislation includes creating a community and law enforcement task force and supporting state and federal bills controlling replica weapons. a controversial planned parenthood clinic is scheduled to open in redwood city on the 2900 block in an area that used to be a restaurant. it will operate about 20 hours a week. it will provide drugs to terminate a pregnancy but will

not offer surgical abortions. opponents have distributed a petition. many are against abortions while some neighbors say the clinic will drive down property values. petaluma city council is expected to move ahead on a plastic bag ban for grocery stores and retailers. first though the council will have to decide between joining sonoma county's current plastic bag ban or drafting legislation specific to petaluma. critics say they believe the county's plastic bag ban would not survive a lawsuit if challenged in court by plastic bag suppliers. governor jerry brown and the california legislature will receive a salary increase starting tomorrow. the governor's pay will go from 165,000 a year to nearly $174,000 a year. lawmakers will receive a 5% bump with most base base salaries increasing from 90 to 95,000. while the governor will accept his raise, a dozen legislators say they will not because many californians are still trying to recover from the recession. compensation commission decided

on the pay hike after slashing salaries by 23% in 2008. there is a celebration today in san mateo county for a law that would protect mountain lions who stray into populated areas. wildlife advocates will make the signing at an event in half- moon bay. mall nourished kittens were found hiding under and deck and later killed by a ranger. outrage over the shooting prompted the law which does allow rangers to relocate mountain lions that are found to not pose a threat to humans. it takes effect january 1st. poi san pills will be dropped from a helicopter. it's part of the u.s. fish and wildlife services and they say the goal is to get rid of the massive swarms of mice. right now there are nearly 500 mice per acre. scientists say they are threatening the rare sea bird population. the agency claims the poison bait is the only available and

the rise. in 2012 online sales for thanksgiving grew 17% over the previous year and black friday online sales grew nearly 21%. new numberses are out for plaque friday shopping. this year consumers spent nearly $9.8 billion at brick and mortar stores. that's a 13% drop from a year ago. a few retailers have opened stores on thanksgiving for the last few years. this year at least a dozen major retailers did so with some opening earlier in the day. that led some analysts to question whether the thanksgiving openings would take away sales on black friday. retail stores are trying out new technology that will help them anticipate what you might want. it was created by a company called index. it helps retailers target products to you based on your taste. the technology can be found within the store's payment system as well as integrated into the the store's apps. a cupcake store in san fransisco is already trying it out. >> we looked at amazon as a backdrop for a lot of the

things we do. amazon's really an incredible experience online and a lot of this has to do with their ability to recognize who you are. >> right now the technology is limited to smaller retailers like cay coe but the founders hope it will eventually be in major retailers. first there was black friday. then there's cyber monday. now there's giving tuesday. giving tuesday was created last year at a ymca in new york city. it is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the holiday season. now the idea is to set aside a day for people to give back to their communities, either with donations or by volunteering. this year more than 7500 groups will be taking part including san jose based ebay. a thief in fremont went on an apple picking extravaganza and stole more than 60 iphones. it happened at 5 a.m. thanksgiving morning at a cell phone store on christy street. at least one person made off with 62 iphones. they say the phones have been extremely hard to track as they had not been activated.

let's introduce you to dexter. the 6-month-old pit bull was found alive nine days after a series of deadly tornadoes hit illinois. his owner says he spent days looking for dexter after those storms passed and then on tuesday a neighbor called saying a crew had found him under the rubble of his destroyed apartment. the vet says dexter was not hurt and only had a few scrapes and cuts. the president and michelle obama are explaining why they do not let their youngest daughter on facebook. president obama told barbara walters that 12-year-old sasha is too long for the social networking site. michelle obama says there is a lot of information on facebook that younger children just don't need to see or be a part of. their older daughter malia has limited access to the site. she was also recently given permission to date. a new trend is making its way across the country that's helping some people burn

site and doing an extraordinary job. >> a law enforcement official on scene says the train operator is claiming to have applied the brakes but says the train did not slow down. san fransisco police are investigating a reported assault on a muni train. it happened just before midnight near 3rd street. the victim who was being assaulted pulled out a knife in self-defense. the suspect was injured and taken to san fransisco general. the victim was released after being questioned by police for using that knife. happening today, people around the world are uniting for the 25th annual world aids day. it is an opportunity to show support for people who live with the disease and honor those who have died. an estimated 34 million people worldwide test positive for hiv. nearly 1 million of those live right here in the united states. while there have been many scientific advances in hiv treatment, the search for a cure continues. about 400 people came together last night at the national aids memorial grove to remember

that might explain why north korea is detaining an 85-year- old man from palo alto. late friday night north korea released a video in which merrill newman apologized for his role in the korean war six decades ago. the reuters news agency and the mercury news now report he once served in a top secret army unit in which he trained anticommunist gorillas. because no peace treaty was signed north korea considers the conflicts against south korea and the u.s. ongoing and say newman is basically a prisoner of war. a stanford professor who's an expert on asia calls the video propaganda but says it may be a sign of something positive to come. >> it's clearly something that he did under some duress and hopefully to lead to his release. >> officials with the swedish embassy were allowed to visit newman yesterday. the white house security council says it's deeply concerned about newman's well being because of his age and health. he does have a heart condition.

we have new information now but a toddler who fell into a vallejo pond. that child remains in critical condition this morning. police are now telling us that the 2-year-old boy was fishing with his guardian around 4 p.m. yesterday. she was attempting to tie a rope around the child to prevent him from falling into that water. when she briefly turned her back he fell into that pond. she didn't know how to swim and couldn't rescue him but a good samaritan jumped in and started searching. once on scene firefighter diane stomeyer jumped into the murky water and after three attempts finally found him. >> they arrived on scene, within 45 seconds to a minute they were able to identify the location of the child and pull him from the water quickly. he does have life-threatening injuries or is in a life- threatening condition. >> the area where this happened is a popular fishing spot near the fairgrounds and six flags discovery kingdom. the boy was taken to kaiser medical center in vallejo and

transferred to oakland where he remains in critical condition. the guardian also went to the hospital because she was having breathing problems. plans are moving forward to build a new park along the bay bridge. the artist rendering shows the park near the new eastern span. officials tell the contra costa times it would be a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. it would also include a fishing pier, zip line and rock climbing wall. the area would also add 300 spaces for people to park their vehicles and then walk or ride their bicycle on the new path of the eastern span. other proposals include a small cafe, large sculptures as well as trees. >> this weekend marks the end of the 2013 atlantic hurricane season. there were a total of 13 named storms, two of them hurricanes. phrasers had predicted a busy year but it was the fewest number of hurricanes in a single year since 1982. just one storm, tropical storm andrea made landfall in the u.s. the reason for the low number of storms include drier than expected air.

again for your afternoon. 40-year-old actor paul walker died yesterday afternoon after a fiery car crash near los angeles. reporter michelle turner has reaction from his friends and the man who tried to save his life. >> one of hollywood's most bankable stars, paul walker who has made a name for himself in the fast and furious movie franchise died in a fiery car crash in santa clarita california. a second person also died in the accident. both were attending a charity event for walker's organization reach out worldwide. the event was intended to benefit the victims of typhoon haiyan in the philippines. the crash happened just north of los angeles on saturday afternoon. according to his representative, paul walker was not driving the 2005 porsche. when deputies arrived the car was on fire. both people in the car pronounced dead at the scene. >> there was nothing. we tried. we went through fire extinguishers. >> all that remains, burnt

helicopter crash at a pub in scotland. a crane removed pieces of the chopper from the crash site. the accident killed three people on board the helicopter and another five people inside the pub. 32 others were admitted to hospitals with injuries. as of this morning, more than half were getting discharged. investigators say the pub was packed friday night when that helicopter crashed bauds people were celebrating the eve of a scottish holiday. >> it was very emotional to see these people, even young guys crying just through the shear shock of it. >> as the search for victims continues inside, outside family members gather including one man who held up a cell phone picture of his father. his father is missing and calls to his dad's cell phone are going unanswered. a prayer service for the victims is being held today at the city's main cathedral. a passenger is being hailed as a hero for putting her own grief aside so she could help survivors of a plane crash in alaska. the cessna prop plane went down

in a remote part of southwest alaska friday night. four people were killed while others survived. a woman phoned for help while trying but failing to resuscitate her 5-month-old boy. she then had to overcome her loss and walk a mile in the cold and fog to reach first responders and guide them to the crash site and the other survivors. time now 8:17. this morning the obama administration announced the health care web site met the deadline for upgrades imposed by the president. officials say the improvements to the site allow more than 50,000 people to log on at once and 800,000 people each day. the site was taken down late friday night into saturday morning for additional upgrades that include speeding up response time and reducing errors. critics say they're still underwhelmed. >> there has been delays out of the wazoo for this thing. first the president delayed the individual mandate. now we find out small businesses won't be able to go online and enroll until, what, another delay, a year. >> the first big test of the repaired web site will come in

preparing for the lines and delays. allie rasmus live at san fransisco international and how does it look right now? >> the conditions are good, mike. you can see the weather is perfect. there's no fog here at sfo no major delays or cancellations to tell you about. right now we're outside terminal 2 where we have been all morning at sfo, and it's been at least this busy all morning long since we've been here. just a steady stream of cars pulling up and dropping off passengers as the thanksgiving travelers prepare to head home. the friday before thanksgiving over a week ago was actually sfo's busiest holiday travel date. this airport is expecting heavier than usual traffic with 130,000 travelers expected to pass through. airport duty manager joe walsh said years ago it seemed like they would get a flood of travelers on wednesday, the day before thanksgiving and that everyone would come back on sunday after thanksgiving. now it appears the passenger flow has changed a little bit. people are starting their travels earlier in the week and coming back on sunday or monday after thanksgiving. the extended travel period has

made for a less stressful travel week for some travelers we talked to. a lot of people said it hasn't been crowded at all at the airports this week. >> i would say a little less than last year. >> we flew right on thanksgiving. it wasn't too bad, and today it's been a little busier this morning. i was prepared for worse. >> reporter: it may be a different story on the roads. the chp says expect highways to be a little more congested than a typical sunday. according to aaa, 4.4 million californians drove more than 50 miles to get to their thanksgiving destination and many of those folks will be coming bag home. the chp plans to have a heavy presence on roadways to make sure everyone gets home safely. live at sfo allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the search continues for a couple who disappeared during a fishing trip in sacramento county. 64-year-old van chimpennxi and his wife chaundra took out the boat on thursday. the boat was discovered near the rio vista bridge in the delta. no one was on board.

he's described add 5 feet 9 inches tall, bald, clean shaven and wearing glasses. his wife is 5 feet 3 inches tall. she has brown hair and brown eyes. anyone with information is asked to call the sacramento county sheriff's department. authorities say they believe they're zeroing in on a man suspected in a case of animal abuse in san fransisco. animal control officers say this man threw two cats belonging to a homeless woman into the bay last monday. officers spent around eight hours looking at surveillance video from cameras around the embarcadero when they caught a break. the hyatt hotel reported a run in with a man matching the suspect's description. a woman who witnessed the abuse was shown a picture of that individual. >> she knew without a doubt she could identify this man if we showed her a picture. and sure enough when we did show her the picture that we thought was the suspect from what she had said and from what others said she absolutely 100% identified him. >> the suspect could face felony animal cruelty charges. authorities say the cat's owner

was traumatized by the attack at pier 14. and now time is 8:33. more on that story in a little bit. one of the world's ugliest dogs has passed away. ellwood was a chihuahua. he won the title back in 2007 and then ellwood later became the character of a children's book about self-acceptance. his owner says she doesn't know what may have caused his death but says he died peacefully in her arms on thanksgiving. sonoma county may erect a permanent memorial for a teenage boy shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. there's a makeshift memorial for 13-year-old andy lopez. he was killed when the deputy mistakenly thought the toy gun lopez was carrying was real. county supervisors are set to consider several items related to the case on tuesday. the press democrat reports that supervisors could order a plan to create a park in the moreland avenue neighborhood where lopez grew up and died. other legislation includes creating a community and law enforcement task force and

supporting state and federal bills controlling replica weapons. a controversial planned parenthood carolina clinic is scheduled to open in redwood city. the facility is located on the 2900 block of el camino roy al and will operate 20 hours a week at the start. it will provide drugs to terminate a pregnancy but not offer surgical abortions. opponents of the clinic have circulated a petition. neighbors say the clinic will drive down property values. governor jerry brown and the california legislature will receive a salary includes increase starting tomorrow. the governor's pay will go from 165,000 a year to nearly $174,000 a year. lawmakers will receive a 5% bump with most base base salaries increasing in 90 to to 95,000. the governor will accept his raise, a dozen legislators will not. a citizen compensation commission decided on the pay hike after slashing salaries by 23% in 2008. the bay area is spending more help to the typhoon

ravaged philippines. we caught up with jane sandoval, a nurse in san fransisco, and she was packing up to leave for the philippines last night. she says she's honored and humbled to assist in the relief effort organized by a network of nurses. >> my parents came from the area that was affected so in a way i'm paying homage to my parents who i no longer have, and i think that they would really be proud of that effort. >> sandoval is joining three other nurses in the philippines. the nurses network has set up mobile medical clinics to serve typhoon victims. the death toll stands at more than 5600 with close to 1800 others missing. reality tv star kim kardashian is getting blasted for keeping much of the proceeds from an auction to help typhoon victims. she auctioned off high end clothes and accessories on ebay and said a portion of the money would go to disaster relief. kardashian is keeping 90% of the profits and many of her fans are criticizing her on their blog. one person asking on her blog

increased to $250,000. many people in the bay area will ditch the malls and turn to their computers for holiday shopping. cyber monday is expected to be a huge hit this season. that's according to the group shopper track. cyber sales last year hit $1.5 billion and retail experts say this year could reach closer to $2 billion. in 2012 online sales on thanksgiving grew 17 percent over the previous year and black friday online sales grew nearly 21%. new numbers out for black friday shopping. this year consumers spent nearly $9.8 billion at brick and mortar stores. that's a 13% drop from a year ago. a few retailers opened their stores on thanksgiving for the last few years and this year at least a dozen major retailers also did so with some opening everyone earlier in the day. that led some analysts to question whether the thanksgiving opening would take away sales on black friday. some retail stores are trying out new technology that would help them anticipate what

memorial building. admission is $5 or you can bridge an unwrapped toy to donate. starting on monday, barrels will collect toys in front of all santa rosa and marin county fire stations. they are going to be collecting toys for children up to 18 years old. and the state's largest gingerbread house is on display at the fairmont hotel in san fransisco. the hotel's culinary team spent hundreds of hours building that sweet treat. it took thousands of house baked gingerbread bricks. 1200 pounds of icing and 650 pounds of candy to complete that project. there's even a gingerbread dog house and you can check that house out until january 1st. a thief in fremont went on an apple picking extravaganza and stole more than 60 iphones. it happened around 5 a.m. thanksgiving morning at a cell phone store on christy street. at least one person made off with 62 iphones. they say the phones have been extremely hard to track as they had not been activated. those devices were valued at $42,000. a woman in florida is trying to figure out who the

this is dexter. he's six months old and he's a pit bull and he was found alive buried under rubble nine days after a series of deadly tornadoes hit illinois. his owner says he spent days looking for dexter after those storms passed and then on tuesday, a neighbor called saying a crew had found him under the rubble of his destroyed apartment, and here is the amazing part. he wasn't hurt. dexter only had a few scrapes and cuts. happening today the national zoo will announce the name of the giant panda cub that was born back in august following chinese tradition, the zoo has waited 100 days to release the name of the cub. zoo officials left it up to the public to decide out of five proposed names, more than 123,000 people voted online.
